SAN FRANCISCO’S Ambience played BFD at Shoreline on the buzz over their moody single “Two Mouths One Head.” After their San Jose appearance tonight, the band is heading to L.A. to challenge that legendary short attention span through a show at the Viper Club. At a First Friday, you’ll have a better time than those L.A. punters, because the Blank Club is a better place to see a show than the Viper Club, period. One hundred reasons why available on request, but here’s no. 34: who needs the moaning ghost of Cry Me a River Phoenix harassing you, gibbering about the tortures of the damned? As I was saying, Ambience indeed has ambience; it’s minor-key, scribbly, floating-in-ether-guitar, edge-of-the-Middle-East-touched prog rock that strikes these ears as a more produced version of old-school local band Angst. (Say, it says here that Angst’s “Some Things” got covered by Black Francis. Who knew?)
AMBIENCE performs Friday, March 5, at 9pm at the Blank Club, 44 S. Almaden Ave, San Jose. Tickets are $7; 408.29.BLANK.
