.Avett Brothers

PUT TO PASTURE: The Avett Brothers bring fear and loathing to Americana.

“DIE DIE DIE” urges this trio of North Carolina–based Americanaists, who grew in the orbit of UNC, Charlotte. In the aforementioned tune, Scott and Seth and acoustic bass whapper Bob Crawford warn us listeners that the days of wine and roses, they are not long. Scott Avett has a far bigger, broader and clearer voice than you usually hear in Americana (generally the refuge of poor or breathy singers—I can say that because I’m one). I’d judge this vocal strength as key to the rocketlike success of these power-folkies. That and the songs for the special ladies (three songs on Mignonette with the phrase “Pretty Girl” in the title, not counting the other times on other records they’ve used that phrase for titles). And the wit of the original songs, as per “Laundry Room”: “Last night I dreamt the whole night long/ I awoke with a head full of songs/ I spent the whole day/ I wrote ’em down but it’s a shame/ tonight I’ll burn the lyrics/ ’cause every chorus was your name.”
