LAST SEPTEMBER, skate-punk legend Duane Peters took a nasty spill during a skate tour and ended up with a staph infection on his leg that got so bad doctors told him amputation was a very real possibility. Since then, he’s been carpeted with medical bills, and—like a lot of musicians—has no health insurance. If you haven’t heard about this, it’s not surprising, since even his own website, otherwise crammed with info, either has nothing about it at all or has it buried so deep it’s impossible to find. In fact, of the efforts to help him out, he’s only posted on Facebook: “just noticed all the cool donation sugestions.I dont think I,m cool with that tho, but thank you all you roadsters.” Of course, if he thought that was going to stop a bunch of punk rockers, he’s crazy. Here in the skate culture ground-zero of the South Bay, where Peters is known as much for the tricks he invented as for his legendary band U.S. Bombs, a benefit was bound to be put together, and it’s no surprise it’s at fellow pro skater Corey O’Brien’s Blank Club. Headlining is the East Bay’s Stagger & Fall, with the Flip Offs and Jonny Manak and the Depressives opening.
