STRUNG OUT and Jughead’s Revenge out of the crossover period of the late ’80s and early 90, a time when it was becoming more common to see punks and metalheads at the same shows not kicking the crap out of each other. Jughead came first; they released their debut album, Unstuck in Time, in 1989. Combining fast punk beats with metallic riffs, JR’s sound fit the norm for the time, but it was obvious they were a cut above the rest by their fine-tuned musicianship and smart lyrics. Over the next 13 years, they released five more albums and toured extensively before being sued by Archie Comics in 2001 because they didn’t want Jughead seen with dirty-mouthed punk rockers. Their record label (Nitro Records, run by the Offspring’s Dexter Holland) pretty much abandoned them on the lawsuit, leading the members to refer to their former record label as “Tax Write-Off Records.” They broke up shortly thereafter and seemed to drop off the face of the Earth. Ten years later, they’ve resurfaced, playing small shows here and there and using their old name. They’ve remained very hush-hush as to the details, but who cares? Jughead’s Revenge is one of those bands that always put on a good show, whether it was 10 people or 10,000. Strung out, meanwhile, has hung in for all this time and are celebrating their 20th anniversary next year. .
