The biblical story of creation has inspired painters, playwrights and musicians for millennia. Austrian classical composer Joseph Haydn turned in his artistic interpretation back in 1799 with “The Creation,” an oratorio that takes its audience from a “Representation of Chaos” up to Adam and Eve’s declaration of love. Keeping in stride with the philosophical and intellectual currents of the decidedly bummer-averse Enlightenment era, the piece ends before the commission of humanity’s original sin—focusing instead on the wonder of God’s creation. Conductor John Nelson leads Symphony Silicon Valley in presenting this unflinchingly optimistic work. (NV)
