Though December is typically dedicated to Mariah Carey and songs about snow, there’s another genre coming to town: klezmer. This Thursday, music aficionados can indulge in the instrumental musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Central and Eastern Europe, through Grammy Award-winning band the Klezmatics. The musical style blends dance tunes, ritual melodies and improvisations into an exciting mix often played at weddings and other social affairs. The Klezmatics began playing in New York’s East Village in 1986 and continue to bring those traditions into the new age, including nine albums for newcomers to dive into, with songs in Yiddish, Aramaic and Bavarian.
