There are so many important and powerful voices from the civil and voting rights movement, but not all have gotten equal attention. Beginning this Wednesday, Fannie Lou Townsend Hamer gets her due in the musical rendition of Fannie, put on by Silicon Valley TheatreWorks. The performance—originally commissioned by the Goodman Theatre and the Seattle Repertory Theatre—has made the rounds across the country, sharing Hamer’s inspiring journey to justice, becoming an outspoken voice for African American voting rights. The Chicago Reader calls the play “essential viewing,” with a “double dose of vigor and hope.”
