Nine-piece experimental jazz ensemble Katalyst, conceived by drummer Greg Paul in the band’s home neighborhood of Inglewood, is quintessentially Angeleno in its sound. One can feel the Santa Ana winds alternate with salty breezes in saxophonist David Otis’s solos. The band members have Hollywood-level collaborations under their belt as well: performance and recording credits include Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Katalyst released their full-length debut, Nine Lives, in September of 2020, and played a national tour in 2022 as well as putting out a compilation with A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad and composer Adrian Younge.
