Hailing out of St. Petersburg, Russia, Messer Chups combines two genres of music that quite possibly, have never been in the same room—surf rock and traditional Russian music. With a sound that is equal parts spooky and sexy, carried on by an undercurrent of enticing rhythm and punctuated by samples from old movies and lounge music, Messer Chups sounds as if Link Wray or the Ventures found polka music before they ever caught wind of the beach. Though little known on this side of the Atlantic, Messer Chups has released two dozen albums and shows no sign of slowing. The St. Petersburg surf-rockers bring their all to the Ritz this Tuesday along with the Volcanics and Douglas Von Irvin’s Carnival.
