A whimsical world of smoldering iron, twisted steel and mesmerizing pattern comes to town this fall in the form of Happenstance, the Triton’s latest exhibition. The show features the metalwork of Jeff Owen, who describes his practice as “brute force, decide-at-the-moment.” Owen’s sculptures first appeared upon his discovery of an abandoned welder and oxy-acetylene torch set in his father-in-law’s garage in Fresno. He fished the tools out from among several feral cats who shared the space, and since then has made schools of kinetic fish, colorful mobiles, ships’ bells and countless other metal creations from tiny to monstrous.
