.23 and Valley: List of New Year’s Eve 2023 in San Jose

New Year’s Eve 2023.

There’s an app for every season and a time for every calendar reminder under heaven, an updated Ecclesiastes might read. As we turn the page on a fresh year and dive into an uncharted 2024 of cars that drive themselves and computers that write poetry, we can live our best lives and be the best humans we can be. Enjoy some music, food and a sparkling beverage,  be sure to dance and get home safely.

There are many options for celebrating this annual ritual without leaving the valley, and this year’s guide compiles a range of interesting options. We wish all readers a good start to the new year.

A Ghanaian Dance Party

Percussionist and choreographer C.K. Ladzekpo moved to the Bay Area in 1973. The scion of an eminent family of performers, he fled a repressive regime and dedicated himself to teaching West African dance and music, particularly of his Ewe people. Thousands of Bay Area students over the decades have studied from Ladzekpo and he remains a foundational figure on a lively African music scene. Ghanaians are few in the South Bay, but anyone who loves the infectiously grooving sounds of classic 1970s and ‘80s Afrobeat, and music from Ghana and the diaspora, including C.K. Mann, Ben Brako, Dade Krama, Orchestra Jazira and George Darko, better bring their best moves and their dancing shoes. DJ Kwammaster keeps the dance floors bouncing. (AG)

Few artists have done more to keep the blues flame burning brightly in the South Bay than J.C. Smith, and his band headlines a triple New Year’s Eve bill at San Jose’s leading juke joint. Smith, a guitarist steeped in the stinging single-note lines of T-Bone Walker and Albert King, rings in the new year with his muscular band featuring bassist Douglas Mancini, keyboardist Scott Porter and veteran saxophonist Noel Catura, whose backed heavyweights such as John Lee Hooker, Bobby Womack, Charles Brown, Eddie “Clean Head” Vinson, Robben Ford and Joey DeFrancesco.
