There’s an old understanding among record collectors that the B-side is often the better track. On the Sufaris seven-inch, “Wipe Out” might be more gnarly with a maniacal laugh and rolling drums, but “Surfer Joe” still holds up. It’s a classic tune of a cool cat blonde dude named—yup—Surfer Joe, who wins the competition by hanging ten but ends up with a bummer wrap in Uncle Sam’s army. The Surfaris still hold up as well with original rhythm guitarist Bob Berryhill and his sons, Deven and Joel, and his wife, Gene, who keep the band keeping on. Another Surfer Joe, the International Surf Music Ambassador from Italy, opens the far-out show. (MW)
