.The Sound of (Black) Music at Stanford

“Do-Re-Mi,” but make it Afrofuturistic? The Sound of (Black) Music is not to be missed. A reimagining of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic musical, the one-act concert takes familiar songs to new heights with gospel, funk, soul and Afrobeat infusions. Vocalists Brianna Thomas and Charenée Wade lead a stellar cast in a performance that is not only entertaining but also evocative of the largely erased impact of Black music on American culture. It’s a perfect way to introduce families of all ages to such themes. Laura Evans, Bing Concert Hall’s Director of Programming, says, “You’ll never hear ‘Do-Re-Mi’ the same way again—so radical and fun!” (AM)
