Aki Kumar plays what he calls “Bollywood Blues,” a blending of Hindi movie melodies that charge the American blues sound with the uplift of Bollywood music. In a story that is very San Jose, Kumar came to the US to study software engineering and ended up studying music, eventually blending blues with the tunes of his youth that he could not stop singing. As Kumar points out, Bollywood has always borrowed from Western music, especially in the ’60s and ’70s. If there ever was a place to debut some new fusion dance moves, it’s at the lovable, earthy and homey Mama Kin. (LP)
