There have been many glorious eras of Mavis Staples: her ’60s rise to fame as part of the Staple Singers; her solo debut; her chart-topping 2010 album You Are Not Alone; her feature on Hozier’s song “Nina Cried Power” and that time she turned down a proposal (of marriage) from Bob Dylan. In a decades-long career that merged gospel, blues and rock, this unstoppable singer has won three Grammys and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. At age 84, she’s singing old hits like “I’ll Take You There,” new songs from her album We Get By and everything in between.
