In 1987, drummer Ahmir Thompson started jamming with high school classmate Tariq Trotter. Today, they’re better known as Questlove and Black Thought of the Roots, the legendary hip-hop band with a history 14 projects deep. They’ve amassed multigenerational fans through their conscious lyricism and progressive musicality, a journey traced from their early jazz rap album Do You Want More?!!!??! (1995) to Things Fall Apart (1999)—the gold-certified child of some extraordinary jam sessions attended by Jill Scott, D’Angelo and others. The Roots, named one of the greatest live bands by Rolling Stone, currently perform as the official house band of The Tonight Show.
