Combining the musical traditions of Italy and the Latin world, Bay Area-based Sonamó carves out a unique niche in the musical landscape. Describing their sound as “funk music with an Italian backbone,” the group, fronted by Italian-born Giuseppe Pinto, cultivates a deep groove and high-energy vibe, drawing from folk, Afrobeat and the rhythms of South America and wrapping it all in a joyous, exuberant multicultural sensibility. The group has released a string of singles (including a re-titled cover of the 1956 classic “Tu vuò fà l’americano”) and Another Story, a four-song EP of original material. Barely Funktional opens.
