As a modern reimagining of Camille Saint-Saëns’s 1886 musical suite, this fresh presentation of Carnival of the Animals was conceived by spoken word artist and activist Marc Bamuthi Joseph as an artistic answer to the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection. The striking synthesis of dance, music and poetry builds upon Joseph’s words, along with the dance artistry of Wendy Whelan and the choreography and direction of Francesca Harper. The aural component of the work features two pianos, violin, and cello, plus inventive use of audio recordings, establishing a connection between past and present while examining race, gender and a changing world.
