Despite the name, gospel music doesn’t have to be exclusively religious. While it does rely heavily on religious themes, gospel music has even deeper roots in America’s dark history of slavery, even going further back into traditional African music. It’s spiritual music in the truest sense, uplifting the human soul in times of trial and rejoicing during times of celebration. Maybe that’s why the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir has spent 16 successful years bringing holiday favorites to Bay Area audiences. As a bonus, the South Bay Holiday Workshop Choir will again join the OIGC onstage for a double dose of harmony and praise.
