From one perspective, Shen Yun is a dance performance celebrating what the presenters describe as “5,000 years of civilization reborn.” In that telling, Shen Yun is an artistic revival of traditional Chinese music and dance, a visual spectacular for the eyes and ears staged by a performing arts organization launched in New York in 2006. From another angle, Shen Yun is the public face of Falun Dafa (also known as Falun Gong), a deeply anti-communist religious movement led by Li Hongzhi, a deity-like figure. Either way, the choreography, set design and costumes are a brilliant display of art and culture.
