Grammy Award-winning Arooj Aftab launched the Pakistani indie music scene as a streaming pioneer, going viral in the early aughts with her takes on “Mera Pyaar” and “Hallelujah.” Aftab grew up in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, teaching herself the guitar by playing and singing along with recordings of Billie Holiday, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Mariah Carey and Begum Akhtar, and eventually developed a singular singing style. Her boundless music combines jazz, electronica, neo-Sufi, folk, Hindustani classical, indie pop and minimalism with a rich, flowing, ethereal voice.
