The Marsalis family is jazz royalty. Of the two best-known members of the clan, Grammy-winning saxophonist Branford Marsalis is more musically open and experimental than his kid brother, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, as evidenced by Branford’s collaborations with psychedelic juggernauts the Grateful Dead and hip hop pioneer and super producer Gang Starr’s DJ Premier. He does possess the Marsalis quality of holding strong opinions and being willing to express and live by them. He quit the highly coveted position of Tonight Show bandleader, explaining that he didn’t know the job involved laughing at Jay Leno’s jokes even when they weren’t funny.
