In California in the ’60s, Chicano soul took hold among listeners. Groups like Cannibal & the Headhunters (“Land of 1000 Dances”) and Thee Midniters (“Whittier Blvd.”) thrilled audiences and achieved some measure of national success. Yet, as prevailing styles came and went, Chicano soul almost seemed to disappear into history. Thank goodness nobody told vocalist Andre Cruz and bandleader Chris Lujan. Their sweet, groove-centered soul is both classic and contemporary at once, celebrating the best qualities of the style. And in keeping with their classicist approach, many of their releases are available on vinyl.
