Andrew Bird can create a melody to evoke any experience, and he usually does so with only a violin, his whistling skills and a looper pedal. The musician’s latest album, Inside Problems, explores interiority after 2019’s politically charged (and Grammy-nominated) My Finest Work Yet. On this album, according to Pitchfork, “Bird steers away from folkier elements of his style, finding a previously uncharted territory closer to indie pop.” With songs inspired by late icons like Joan Didion and Lou Reed, Bird grafts the legacy of famous artists onto his personal experience with results that are spectral and sweet at the same time.
