The Beta Space series commissions artists to experiment with new ideas, materials and models. As the world navigates multiple climate crises, the eighth Beta Series premieres Stray Dog Hydrophobia (2024), a multidisciplinary project by LA-based artists and educators Patty Chang and David Kelley. Their exhibition takes the form of an open lab and explores sites uninhabited by humans, starting with the deep sea. As the International Seabed Authority begins to draft deep-sea mining regulations, Chang and Kelley weave together footage and objects from significant moments of resource extraction by marine research centers and authorities, painting a portrait of the ocean floor’s past, present and future.
