Charles Perrault’s 17th-century French folktale Bluebeard tells the story of a mysterious aristocrat and the young bride who discovers that he murdered six wives in his castle. Since its publication, the fairy tale has been interpreted and adapted into countless short stories, novels, plays, ballets, movies, cartoons and at least one They Might Be Giants song. Composed by Béla Bartók and with a liberato by Béla Balázs, Bluebeard’s Castle opera was first staged in 1918. Directed by Shawna Lucey and conducted by Joseph Marcheso, Opera San José’s production stars Maria Natale as Judith and Zachary Nelson as Duke Bluebeard.
