Better Late Than Never

I am writing this letter to express my opinion on Proposition 8. I am so disappointed by this selfish proposition and our constitutional rights of voting in the United States. Prop. 8 passed because of some people that complained that same-sex marriage is a sin and should only be between a male and a female. No one had any right to interfere with same-sex marriage or to judge them.

There are Christians that are true and loving to God in a nonjudgmental way to accept people the way they are. These types of churches allow other types of people who are different in any lifestyle—if they believe in God or not, or even if they are gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual or trans.

Everyone, no matter how they are born or created, has a right to have a marriage, even if it is a same-sex marriage. If God says "don't judge your neighbor," then don't. It is a sin to judge or control other people's lives.

This terrible proposition is hypocritical and discriminating. What happened to same-sex marriage that passed fair and square the first time? It passed by law, then was taken away with discriminatory behavior by people who it doesn't really concern. These people need to focus on their own lives if they are so set in thinking that there is only one type of marriage. They are terribly wrong. If they can't see it differently, then they are blind.

Same-sex marriage is anyone's right. Their love is also real. Accept their personal lives as you would your very own.

Meat and Health

The recent withdrawal of the diet drug Meridia from all markets is the latest setback in the long and frustrating quest for a pharmaceutical solution to our obesity epidemic. Drug companies have spent millions of dollars on research and development, but none of the diet drugs on the market are considered very effective. Some are even dangerous.

Unfortunately, obesity is the number one public health problem in our community and for our nation—one-third of our population is obese. It's responsible for heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes and other chronic diseases, accounting for millions of premature deaths annually.

Causes of obesity include consumption of fat-laden meat and dairy products and inadequate exercise. The failure of the drug industry to come up with a quick fix adds emphasis to the diet/exercise solution, which is particularly critical during childhood years, when lifestyle habits become lifelong addictions.

We need to adopt some healthy changes to solve this crisis. Let's start by replacing meat and dairy products in our diet with wholesome grains, vegetables and fruits, and adopt a regular exercise program. We must insist our schools introduce wholesome meal choices for our children, because they are our future.

In our Dec. 29 issue (read: between eggnog and Champagne), the production of A Christmas Carol mentioned in David Templeton's "Top 10 Torn Tickets" was erroneously credited to the Sixth Street Playhouse—who are great! But who, as is evident in our current and vivid sobriety, never presented any such play in 2010. The honor should have been duly credited to the also-great, big-warm-hug folks at the marvelous Imaginists Theatre Collective.
