More help for Haiti

By Gretchen Giles

Perhaps the sole not-horrible thing to come out of the Haitian earthquake disaster is to witness the good will and fine intentions of others. Several local benefits have already been mounted, and thousands in donations have been collected and sent. The newest slate of benefits is being planned, with the Mystic Theatre collaborating with Petaluma merchants and area musicians to present a full swathe on Thursday, Feb. 18. Such establishments as Dempsey's, Tres Hombres and Graziano's, among a growing list of participants, will give 10 percent of proceeds for that night's dining to Doctors Without Borders; servers at those spots have also offered to donate 10 percent of their tips for the night.

After eating, benefactors are encouraged to walk over to the Mystic, where entrance is free and donations are suggested; all proceeds will also go to DWB. Bands giving their services gratis include members of Hot Buttered Rum and Poor Man's Whiskey, Tim Eschliman, Bonnie Hayes, Hillside Fire, Jesse de Natale, Arann Harris with members of Brothers Comatose, Mr. December, the Easy Leaves, Toast Machine and the Green String Farm Band. Additional acts are being added and the Mystic promises a surprise announcement on Valentine's Day. A raffle and auctions throughout the night add to the fun for a good cause. To donate, contact Mystic owner Ken O'Donnell through restaurantshelpinghaiti.com. . . .

Meanwhile Tone Fitness in Santa Rosa has planned a slate of Saturday classes, payable by donation only, with 100 percent of the monies going to help support Haitian relief efforts. Classes are through Feb. 27 and are varied, with one at 3pm and the other at 4:15pm each Saturday afternoon, capturing the breadth of instruction offered, from yoga to Zumba and back again. Movement Oasis in Santa Rosa plans a night of "Love Songs and Dance Prayers for Haiti" on Saturday, Feb. 20, featuring call-and-response Kirtan music with Sahar Pinkham. Sixty percent of funds will go to Doctors Without Borders. For details, call 707.544.2673. . . .

The D'Argenzio Winery was so impressed by the amount of donations it collected just by setting a jar out during the recent Winter Wineland event that they are donating all tasting fees through the end of February to Haitian relief efforts. Owner Ray D'Argenzio would like to team up with other wine producers in the effort. To learn more or add your winery to a coalition, call them at 707.280.4658. . . .

Iron Springs Brewing Co. teams up with Integrated Design Studio and the American Red Cross to host an afternoon of great beer, music, food and fun on Friday, Feb. 5, from 6pm to 10pm at the design studio. 219 Shoreline Hwy., Mill Valley. $20–$100, donation. 415.485.1005.
