The Whisperings of War

Santa Rosa Junior College recognizes the dynamite of discussion with a War & Peace Forum titled "Iraq and Afghanistan: War Without End or Possibilities for an Enduring Peace?" Presented by SRJC faculty and open to the public, the gathering explores the causes and implications of America's role in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Kicked off by an introduction given by Geri Gorski and Martin Bennet of the Social Science Department, the schedule also invites opinions with two workshops and panel discussions. Profs and students of every background put their heads together on Thursday, Sept. 19, at SRJC's Doyle Library. 1501 Mendocino Ave., Santa Rosa. Free. 3pm to 6pm. 707.527.4873.

Tribute to Bob Burke

While SRJC recognizes American compatriots abroad, the Santa Rosa Disability Services and Legal Center (DSLC) honors a local hero by awarding the late Bob Burke its 2010 Independent Living Award. Co-owner of Burke's Canoe Trips and founder of Bob Burke's Kids, a fun activities program that brings children with disabilities together with nature, the Forestville native who died this summer changed the landscape for children and families struggling with disabilities all over Northern California. Bob Burke's Kids and the DSLC salute the man himself on Sept. 15 at Burke's Canoe Trips. 8600 River Road, Forestville. Free. 6 to 8pm. 707.528.2745.

Progressive Politics

The progressive radio station KPFA 94.1 FM lets it rip as the candidates up for election to the Local Station Board extend their platforms to the station's listeners with a Candidates Forum on Sep. 19. KPFA, which has made a name for itself as a forum for public news and events, depends on members of the Local Station Board to maintain the station's vision and direction as well as the infrastructure that allows the station to thrive. Free press supporting candidates come to pay homage to the democratic underpinnings of independent media at the Peace & Justice Center of Sonoma County. 467 Sebastopol Ave., Santa Rosa. Free. 2pm to 5pm. 510.332.7181.
