Moves Awards Wilkinson
The 15th annual Day of Non-Violence luncheon honors Jim Wilkinson posthumously with the 2010 Bob Tunks Peace Award on Friday, Oct. 22. Wilkinson was a former U.S. State Department diplomat in Thailand, Australia, Germany and Russia. He retired from diplomacy in 1991, moving to Santa Rosa in 1999, and helped to found the Neighborhood Alliance of Santa Rosa. Alongside his wife, Ellen, he mentored students at Roseland University Prep. He passed away in April; his book Who Rules Santa Rosa and Why It Matters was published shortly afterward. Presented by Minimizing Occurrences of Violence in Everyday Society (MOVES), Wilkinson is honored for his lifelong social contributions as an inspiration to help "create a peaceful and just community, both locally and globally." Woolsey's Student Aid Forum
The Santa Rosa Junior College Student Financial Services and Associated Students hold a special financial aid forum with House Representative Lynn Woolsey as the key speaker. Experts discuss student aid, financial planning, public and institutional awards. Children-First Meeting
Mission: Readiness, an organization founded by retired military leaders seeking to improve the lives of American youth, sends retired major general Paul Monroe to discuss community investment in education, just one of several speakers at the event sponsored by the Child Care Planning Council of Sonoma County. Status of Women Forum
On Oct. 23 and Nov. 6, the Commission on the Status of Women holds public forums to discuss issues affecting Sonoma County's women and girls. The commission uses information gathered at the public forum to make recommendations to the Board of Supervisors for budget priorities, legislative and administrative action. The first of two forums happens on Saturday, Oct. 23, at the downtown Santa Rosa Public Library, 211 E St., Santa Rosa, 2—4pm.
