Hoppin' in Sonoma

Beer and live music venue pulls taps in east Sonoma County

By Haley Sansom

Hopmonk Tavern owner Dean Biersch knows Sonoma is renowned for its world-class wine, but this week Biersch, with his 23 years in the brewpub industry, challenges Sonoma's wine lovers to delve into the world of small-batch craft beers with the opening of Hopmonk Tavern in Sonoma.

The new addition opens its doors with 16 beers on tap, focused on seasonal domestic and international specialty beers, and a food menu courtesy of chef Billy Reid. Biersch aims to bring as much of the Sebastopol location to Sonoma as possible, including an outdoor beer garden equipped with a fire pit and communal tables. Sonoma's restaurant will also be both dog- and bike-friendly.

While Hopmonk "East" will still provide live music, it will differ from the music setup in Sebastopol. Due to differing laws regarding music amplification in Sonoma, all performances will have to be acoustic at both the restaurant's outdoor band shell and indoor stage. The Pat Jordan Band, unplugged, will christen the location on opening night Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Hopmonk Sonoma. 691 Broadway, Sonoma. 9pm. Free. 707.935.9100.
