Sean McCarthy spreads out from student pranks to the film-festival circuit at this year’s Cinequest.

Running Feb. 28 to March 11, Cinequest brings to San Jose a cavalcade of old masters and young strivers. This year’s edition of the long-running festival includes guest appearances by Terence Davies (The House of Mirth, Distant Voices, Still Lives), Phil Kaufman (The Right Stuff, The Unbearable Lightness of Being) and Elliott Gould (who appears in the local feature Dorfman).

From around the world, short, feature and documentary filmmakers will be competing for honors at the festival. Meanwhile, there will be parties, seminars and some surprises.

The movies screen at Camera 12, the San Jose Rep and the California Theatre.

Our coverage includes profiles of local filmmakers Sean McCarthy and Brad Leong, as well as a critics’ selection of the festival’s highlights and a guide to the best of the rest. This year’s crew of reviewers: Richard von Busack, Michael S. Gant, Steve Palopoli, Don Hines and Misa Shikuma. Look for more Cinequest insights in our next issue and follow us on Facebook and Twitter for continuing updates.
