The Black Tulip
(Afghanistan; 115 min.)
As a restaurant/cultural center called “The Poet’s Corner” tries to open in Kabul, it’s besieged by the Taliban. The co-owner is the daughter of an Afghan killed by the occupying Russians years previously. Meanwhile, a young girl (Somaia Razaya) waits for her impending marriage. This was the only feature film made in Afghanistan in 2010, shot in inarguably hazardous conditions by L.A.-based Afghan exile Sonia Nassery Cole.
SPECIAL EVENT: The March 1 screening of the film will feature a panel discussion with executive producer Natalie Cole (daughter of Nat King Cole) and the other producers; the panel will be moderated by Metro’s Executive Editor Dan Pulcrano.
March 1, 9:30pm; March 6, 4:15pm; March 8, 9:45pm; all showings at San Jose Rep.
