This old-school tale of a dimwitted young man falling in love with a real doll and then being saved by the lady who loves him is a tale as old as time and certainly topical in a moment when beautiful machines tantalize everyone’s senses. There are many lessons to be learned from the ballet about stupid admiration and the facade of beauty. The young lady named Swanhilda is the tale’s hero, while the life-sized and lifeless doll exposes the folly of virility in young men. This fresh take on the classic ballet is a dandy of a production that should be savored and enjoyed as it was written: a fun comedy executed as ballet.
