Rocking a silver pompadour and many tattoos, singer Dale Watson brings the sounds of country legends like Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and George Jones into the present. He swears by their blunt authenticity, too, once walking out of a Nashville writers’ room in the ’90s when asked to write a song that captured the experience of a pregnant teenage girl. His outspoken dislike for contemporary trends has earned him labels like “alt-country” and “Ameripolitan.” He is a Texan and a lyricist at heart, but a recent move to Memphis inspired his 2021 album of retro rockabilly instrumentals, Dale Watson Presents: The Memphians.
