The latest issue of Alta Journal is ushered in by a hot, live debate between three writers: which 25 novels capture the spirit, complexity, diversity, and culture of California? Charlie Jane Anders (cocreator of transgender Marvel superhero Escapade), Rachel Kushner (author of The Hard Crowd and internationally bestselling novel The Mars Room), and José Vadi (author of Chipped: Writing from a Skateboarder’s Lens and Inter State: Essays from California) will discuss and analyze the ingredients that make a novel truly Californian. Alta Journal’s editorial director, Blaise Zerega (previous editor of Red Herring), moderates the lively conversation. The event begins with a drinks reception.
