4. Through Being Cool
Their fourth album, the New Traditionalist (1981), wasn’t their strongest record, but it had some standout tracks like “Through being cool.” The song—as well as the ridiculous video—are clearly commenting on the new Devo craze brought on by the unexpected mainstream popularity of Whip It. Kids everywhere were jumping on this new Devo trend, unaware of the dark, satirical message inherent in the band’s songs. There is some venom to this video.
