Three old friends join in a new collaboration with traditional acoustic instruments from Iran, China and India. Wu Man plays the pipa, a Chinese lute; Sandeep Das taps the tablas, a percussion from India; and Kayhan Kalhor plays the kamancheh, a stringed instrument from Iran. All three are known as masters in their own right. Their music together is kinetic, exciting, and inspiring, crossing borders. The sounds may strike the Western ear as uniquely distinct, giving it a quality of being rooted in tradition, but watching the masters shows the genre is full of freedom to play around. (LP)
