.Silicon Valley Beer Week

If anyone can reinvent the universe as we know it, Elon Musk can

California is in the midst of one of the most severe droughts on record. And while weather scientists are forecasting a wet and wild El Nino this winter, we’re parched right now. Fortunately, Silicon Valley Beer Week kicks off this weekend, providing the perfect opportunity to unironically follow the directions of pickup truck bumper stickers, novelty T-shirts and country singer Chris Young.

That’s right. It’s time to save water and drink beer.

From July 24 to Aug. 1, venues, restaurants and breweries all over the valley will be hosting beer tastings, specialty food pairings, educational seminars and tap-takeovers, among other beer-oriented events.

There’s a whole lot going on over the next eight days and with all beer on tap, in bottles and cascading from pitchers, things are sure to get a bit confusing. But never fear. That’s what our Silicon Valley Beer Week guide is for. This issue features a comprehensive list of every scheduled Beer Week event (as of our print deadline, that is). But that’s not all.

Tired of getting punched in the face with hops? You’re not alone. We spoke to local brewers from all over Silicon Valley to find out whether the bitey and often bitter IPA has reached a tipping point.

Also inside, read about the contentious battles micro-breweries are waging with each other over the fonts, slogans, quips and even the beer-related puns they print on their labels.

And finally, we’ve highlighted of some of the best, locally owned suds shops in Silicon Valley. From Jane’s Beer Store in Mountain View to Kelly’s Liquors in San Jose’s Japantown, the dedicated beer fanatics at each of these locations will provide knowledge and assistance in tracking down the best beers available.—Nick Veronin
