Founded in 1999 by Belgian composer Pete Vermeersch, the Flat Earth Society Orchestra (FES) is a staggering 15-piece ensemble taking orchestral DNA and genetically engineering something new that’s equally beautiful and monstrous. Their music ranges from elegant and composed to chaotic, disjointed—and sometimes, just plain kooky. Celebrating their 25th year, FES are touring the country and taking no prisoners. The extra icing on their layered cake of arrangements is their new album, The One, released this past March. With the FES, it’s easy to imagine Frank Zappa would definitely be a fan.
