The pioneer of the “ratchet” sound and architect of some of the biggest hip-hop hits of the last several years, DJ Mustard comes to Pure Lounge this Friday. And over the course of the weekend, some of the nastiest brawls ever brought to a TV near you will be going down at Genesis 4—a Super Smash Bros. tournament at the San Jose Convention Center.

Lenny, Meg and Babe test their sisterhood in this Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Directed by Giovanna Sardelli, TheatreWorks presents Crimes of the Heart—a mixture of comedy and tragedy. With Lenny turning 30, Meg fresh out of rehab and Babe out of jail, these three siblings press up against the boundaries of their relationship while dealing with the scrutiny of judgy neighbors in their small town. Written by Beth Henley, Crimes of the Heart won a New York Drama Critics Circle Award and was nominated for a Tony Award. Runs through Feb. 5. (DSJ)

Presented by SJ Made, “Soundscaping SJMA” brings together a heavy-hitting lineup—including Rey Res, DJ Cutso, Mighty Mike McGee and Containher—for an evening of impressive sights and thought-provoking sounds. Get hands-on with screen printing and color workshops, or simply enjoy the art as some of the South Bay’s best wordsmiths and melody makers weave together a contemplative sonic atmosphere. (BS)
A Day in Hollywood, A Night in the Ukraine

Get two for the price of one when the Palo Alto Players recreate a double bill of one-act musicals, A Day in Hollywood and A Night in the Ukraine. Nominated for nine Tony Awards, the innovative, two-musicals-in-one structure makes for a night full of toe-tapping, belly-laughing delight. The first act is a revue of classic Hollywood songs, while the second act presents a fictional Marx Brothers comedy, with actors donning bushy eyebrows, blond curls and devilish grins. Mustard on the beat! The pioneer of the hyphy-influenced “ratchet” sound is bringing his stripped-down, hard-slapping beats to the South Bay this weekend—to Pure Lounge, where he has performed several times before. A record producer, songwriter and DJ, Dijon McFarlane—b.k.a. DJ Mustard—has spun up several chart-topping hits, including “I’m Different” by 2 Chainz, “Rack City” by Tyga and “No Mediocre” by T.I. Mustard released his second full-length solo effort last September. Titled Cold Summer, the record boasted a star-studded lineup, including Young Thug, John Legend, Nicki Minaj, Meek Mill and more. Returning this year are legendary Smash players like Mang0, Armada and Hungrybox, as well as a large number of talented locals. The propulsive, worldly, new wave sound and energetic live experience of Oingo Boingo didn’t die when Danny Elfman dissolved the band to write music for movies. It’s been preserved by tribute group Dead Man’s Party. For more than 15 years DMP have been rocking shows with faithful renditions of Boingo hits like “Grey Matter,” “No One Lives Forever” and “Dead Man’s Party”—natch. The tribute group boasts an eight-piece lineup, resembling the original band’s roster, and they’ve even been known to bring original Oingo Boingo members, like Johnny Hernandez, John Avila and Steve Bartek, along for the fun. You can finally take an android on a date. No, this isn’t Westworld. It’s The Pear Theatre’s latest production, Uncanny Valley. Written by Thomas Gibbons and directed by Caroline Clark, the play centers around a robot’s journey toward sentience. Described by The Washington Post as “fascinating” and “cerebrally challenging,” Uncanny Valley takes its title from the term used to describe the uncomfortable and eerie emotions we feel when a human replica appears almost—but not quite—lifelike. Test your own limits with this story about the collision of technology and humanity. Runs through Feb. 12. (DSJ)
ALTERBEAST

Over the past couple years ALTERBEAST have been making a name for themselves on the death metal scene, opening up for major acts like Severed Savior, Exhumed and Decide, and dropping their excellent full-length debut, Immortal, in 2014. They tracked the record at Sound Temple Studios with the help of engineer Ryan “Bart” Williams, former bassist for The Black Dahlia Murder. They’re known for wild guitar solos, blistering rhythms and an explosive stage show. Formed in Sacramento in 2011, the group originally went by the moniker Gary Busey Amber Alert before re-antichristening themselves. (VS)

San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles
Immerse yourself in a world of colors and textures at this exhibition at the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles. An ode to the artistry of tapestry-weaving, the show will feature creative cloth constructions from a variety of artists hailing from eight different countries. Among the featured tapestries are works by Berkeley resident Lia Cook, who uses a combination of weaving, painting, photography and video. Cook will display work spanning the entirety of her career—from the ’80s to today. Some of her pieces were completed only a few weeks before the exhibit. (DSJ)
