Though Initiate are here to ride the recent wave of California hardcore, the SoCal five-piece have been shredding things up since at least 2016. Lavender, the band’s thrashy 2020 EP came out one month before a little thing called “the pandemic.” Partially inspired by the works of Alice Walker, Lavender is an example of hardcore’s current breadth, incorporating literary perspectives and acoustic etudes into a brief and brutal moshpit (runtime: under 12 minutes). Originally scheduled for Playback Studios, this show has been moved to X Bar in Cupertino, where Initiate are joined by Punitive Damage, Jawstruck and Bite the Hand.
