JARED LETO’S overbooked schedule led to the rescheduling of this show from January, and it was handled without mentioning his other career. But then, Leto has always been a movie star in a band who doesn’t want to be in a “movie-star band.” Supposedly any attempts to use his name to promote a 30 Seconds to Mars show are strictly verboten. That’s admirable, and actually it makes practical sense—who wants to be associated with a subgenre that brought us Keanu Reeves’ Dogstar and Russell Crowe’s 30 Odd Foot of Grunts? But 30 Seconds to Mars sounds better than probably any movie-star-project out there. Vocalist/guitarist Leto and his drummer brother, Shannon, formed the band in 1998, and after a debut record that tried way too hard, they’ve evolved into better-than-average emo-pop. Here’s a tip for Leto, though: if you’re trying to shake the “movie-star rock band” tag, perhaps it’s best to not promote your most popular song (“The Kill”) with a movie in which you star with your rock band.
