Critics of jazz music have to tell themselves a fairy tale about how jazz’s best days are behind. They must sell themselves on this fantasy in order to maintain their hater energy. They must ignore the extremely visible existence of dudes like Jose James, dudes who have not only the chops and talent, but the X-factor that lets those with a little extra mojo break out from the crowd. His dulcet baritone voice will lead the four-piece band through a songbook of covers and originals this afternoon, with talented vocal artist Jackie Gage also performing.
