As traditional American music evolved in the early 20th century, it diverted from a single river into different streams, producing currents of country, blues and soul. Growing up in Texas, however, guitarist Jimmie Vaughan never understood the pigeonholing of genres, as he could hear bits of little country ditties in blues arrangements. A free thinker, Vaughan didn’t fare much better in childhood guitar lessons. Realizing it was up to him to pursue the music he wanted, Vaughan broke away from the pack. Besides being the older brother of Stevie Ray Vaughan (yes, that Stevie Ray Vaughan), he’s won four Grammy Awards for his unique slice of American guitar playing.
