Despite now living in—ugh, of course—Los Angeles, Joey Avery is still a Bay Area comedian at heart. After starting his career in Cape Town, South Africa, of all places (no joke), Avery cut his teeth and fine-tuned his act throughout California. It was in the Bay where he made a name for himself. By working the rooms, he earned the title of one of San Francisco’s “Comics on the Rise” by the San Francisco Chronicle. In 2019, he cut the comedy album Pier 69: Junior Varsity in collaboration with three fellow comedians who contributed to the “Pier 69” podcast. When he’s not trying to make people laugh, he’s currently the only comedian pretending to run for mayor in four major US cities, including San Jose.
