Most singer-songwriters tend to work in one genre; they might make the occasional foray into other styles, but a sharply defined approach tends to define those in that idiom. John Hiatt is no typical singer-songwriter, as his work seamlessly blends—transcends, really—rock, blues, folk, country and Americana. He’s even worked convincingly for a time in a New Wave style. As prolific as he is gifted, Hiatt has released over 24 studio albums; his latest is 2021’s Leftover Feelings with the Jerry Douglas Band. He was also part of the short-lived ’90s supergroup Little Village with Ry Cooder, Jim Keltner and Nick Lowe.
