No matter how it’s sliced, it’s a fact that Joshua Roman is a musical prodigy. The Oklahoma native was appointed principal cellist for the Seattle Symphony, making him the youngest principal player in the organization’s history. In the mid-aughts, he left to pursue a solo career. Then, the pandemic changed everything. Roman contracted long covid, which radically altered his life. Like all great artists, Roman transmuted his pain into expression. His latest show combines storytelling and music in an examination of illness. It features musical selections like Bach and Caroline Shaw and takes the audience through the impact of illness, the struggle that comes with it and the path toward self-acceptance and renewal.
