Thanksgiving approaches and, with it, the seasonal conundrum of keeping conversation civil with family members on the other side of both the table and the political spectrum. There is perhaps no better preparation for this challenge than reading Anand Giridharadas’ latest book The Persuaders: At the Front Lines of the Fight for Hearts, Minds, and Democracy. The journalist/pundit makes a case for the enduring art of persuasion, urging Americans not to give up on healthy argumentation with their political opponents—an ancient art he has found to be dying a sad death in modern times.
