Predict and Serve
The Santa Cruz Police Department takes a chapter out of a Philip K. Dick science-fiction tale when they begin using an algorithm to predict the locations and times of spikes in crime. Santa Cruz becomes the first city in the nation to use this relatively new and totally controversal technique, with the inaugural prediction leading officers to a dorm room housing a six-pack of Zima. The future is here.
No Mo’ Money
San Jose budget cuts go into effect, which means police layoffs, gang task force stripped in half, libraries and community centers closed, etc. More brutally, the number of quality Thai restaurant dips from a respectable 1,400 to a measly 862.
Stayin’ Alive
San Joseans know how to beat the reaper. According to a study released by The Daily Beast, the city’s life expectancy is the longest of any big American city: 79.2 for men and 82.9 for women. The study apparently does not take into account people who attend Hell’s Angels funerals.
